Rebounds, Free Throws Lead To Titan Win

Overwhelming advantages in both rebounds and free throws helped the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team defeat North Park University (Ill.), 70-57, on Saturday (Dec. 21) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (3-6) collected 41 of the game's 63 rebounds, including 18 on the offensive end. Max Schebel, who also scored four points, grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds to lead the Titans. UW-Oshkosh's Alex Olson recorded his second career double-double by totaling 17 points and a personal-best 11 rebounds.

At the free throw line, UW-Oshkosh converted 21 of its 26 attempts (80.8 percent). The Titans were nearly perfect in the second half as they missed only once in 18 tries. North Park University (2-7) was 9-of-16 shooting (60 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Vikings held the early advantage before Jade Royston drove and floated a shot off the glass to tie the score at 13. Olson stole the ball and went coast-to-coast on the following North Park possession to give the Titans the lead. UW-Oshkosh remained in front for the final 29:53 of the contest.

Dylan Wurtz drove to the hoop, finished and hit a free throw with 4:48 remaining in the half to put the Titans up 23-14. Free throws by Royston and Jake Laihinen put UW-Oshkosh ahead 25-14 for its largest lead of the opening period.

The start of the second half looked like a three-point contest, with both teams settling for long jumpers. UW-Oshkosh made 4-of-14 triples in the second half (28.6 percent), while North Park University converted 3-of-9 (33.3 percent). Both teams made just one three-point shot in the first half.

Michael Patt came off the bench in the second half to drain three of his four three-point tries. All of them came within a three-minute stretch, with the last delivery giving the Titans a 51-41 lead with 6:57 to play.

UW-Oshkosh's biggest lead of the contest was 16 points. A pair of Kyle Bolger free throws created the 66-50 score with 1:50 left.

Wurtz contributed to the Titans' victory by totaling 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Bolger added 10 points, including seven on free throws.

JayQuan Lee and Juwan Henry led North Park in scoring, finishing with 15 points each. Aaron Weaver tallied 12 points and led the Vikings with six rebounds and four steals.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the game shooting 38.6 percent (22-57) from the field, but just 20 percent (5-25) behind the three-point arc. North Park shot 47.8 percent (22-46) from the field, but only 26.7 percent (4-15) from long range.

The contest was the first between the teams since the 1997-98 season.
