Titans' Comeback Bid Falls Short

A late second-half rally wasn't enough as the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team lost a 77-71 decision to UW-Superior on Saturday (Dec. 7) in Superior.

The Titans trailed 66-54 before battling back to cut their deficit to 75-70 on Alex Olson's lay-up with 25 seconds left. Following a Yellowjacket turnover and a missed UW-Oshkosh lay-up, UW-Superior iced the victory on Jarrod Peterson's free throw with 17 seconds remaining.

A free throw from both UW-Oshkosh's AJ Mueller and UW-Superior's Johnathan Scott closed the game's scoring.

UW-Superior (3-4/1-1 WIAC) opened the second half with an 11-2 scoring run. Brian Lindblom drained a pair of three-point shots during the spree, including one that upped the Yellowjackets' lead to 40-28 with 16:46 to play.

UW-Superior extended its advantage to 50-34 and continued to hold a double-digit cushion until a three-pointer from Jade Royston made the score 57-48 with 7:34 remaining.

The Yellowjackets scored seven of the game's first nine points and owned an 11-5 lead with 11:49 left in the opening period.

The Titans responded quickly, outscoring UW-Superior 15-4, over the next 4:41 to take a 20-15 lead with 7:08 left. UW-Oshkosh led 26-21 before the Yellowjackets scored the period's final eight points to take a 29-26 advantage to intermission.

Olson totaled 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals to record career-bests in all four categories. The Titans also received 14 points and four rebounds from Royston and 12 points and four rebounds from both Max Schebel and Dylan Wurtz.

Tilyn Hollis came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points for UW-Superior. The Yellowjackets also obtained 16 points and five rebounds from Peterson, 14 points from Lindblom and 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots from seven-footer Bronson Byrne.

UW-Oshkosh shot 41 percent (24-59) from the field, 33 (6-18) from three-point range and 63 (17-270 from the free throw line. The Titans (1-5/0-2 WIAC) grabbed 31 rebounds and turned the ball over 13 times.

UW-Superior posted shooting percentages of 43 (25-58) from the field, 41 (9-22) behind the three-point arc and 75 (18-24) from the free throw stripe. The Yellowjackets, who totaled 42 rebounds and 18 turnovers, made seven of their nine three-point shots in the second half.

UW-Oshkosh's next game is Wednesday (Dec. 11) in Kolf Sports Center against UW-La Crosse.
