Pointers End Titans' Season In WIAC Tournament Semifinal

Each time UW-Oshkosh got close in the second half, UW-Stevens Point responded with a surge as the Pointers knocked off the Titans, 81-69, in the semifinal round of the WIAC Men's Basketball Tournament on Thursday (Feb. 26) in Stevens Point.

UW-Stevens Point (22-4) moves on to the WIAC Tournament final on Saturday (Feb. 28), where it will host UW-Platteville (22-4) for the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Pointers, who entered the game ranked sixth in the nation by D3hoops.com, owned a 35-30 advantage at halftime. UW-Oshkosh (16-11) stormed out of the break, however, tallying eight points in less than 80 seconds to go in front. D.J. Marsh (Jr. • Bayside) made a lay-up to tie the score at 35 before Matt Miller (Sr. • Hudson) drained his fifth three-pointer of the contest to go up 38-35 with 18:26 left.

UW-Stevens Point answered the challenge, getting successful jump shots from Louis Hurd, Matt Moses and Pete Rortvedt on three straight possessions. Nick Krull then closed out the streak of eight unanswered points by putting the Pointers ahead, 43-38, at the free throw line with 16:14 on the clock.

A Marsh drive and Steven Waudby (Jr. • Marquette, Mich.) jump shot brought the Titans within 45-44, but that is as close as the game would get. This time, Khalifa El-Amin nailed a basket while Rortvedt drained a triple as UW-Stevens Point ran off seven straight points for a 52-44 advantage with 12:47 to play.

Bryan Beamish put in three consecutive lay-ups midway through the closing period to stretch the Pointers’ cushion to 11 points (63-52) at the 7:02 mark. Marsh single handedly kept UW-Oshkosh in range, counting his team’s next four field goals and adding two free throws with 3:12 remaining to make it 71-65.

Jared Jenkins and Beamish each hit three free throws in the last 2:45 to seal the victory. Beamish finished with 14 points while Jenkins notched 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Rortvedt led the squad with 17 points, in addition to 13 from Hurd and 12 from El-Amin.

UW-Stevens Point put together an 8-2 scoring spurt early in the contest to take hold of an 11-6 lead on Rordvedt’s three-pointer. Miller, who buried six long-range baskets in the contest, knocked down a pair of triples to cut the Titans’ deficit to 17-16 with 9:55 to play before intermission.

Hurd recorded a lay-up and a three-point play to put the Pointers up 24-20 before Jenkins answered a Miller bomb with a long-range jumper of his own. Miller swished another three-point jumper to make it a two-point game (30-28), but UW-Stevens Point registered five more points before the break, including a Beamish tip-in just prior to the buzzer.

Marsh amassed 30 points and nine rebounds, marking the seventh consecutive game he has scored at least 22. Miller tacked on 18 points and three assists while Dane Seckar-Anderson (Sr. • Oshkosh) posted nine points and six rebounds.

A three-point basket from Jordan Kappen then cut the margin to 52-38 with 12:11 remaining.

Marsh, who tallied the winning lay-up in Wednesday’s (Feb. 18) upset over third-ranked UW-Whitewater, broke a 72-72 deadlock with his bucket with 37 seconds remaining.

UW-Superior (11-14/4-12 WIAC) missed a three-point shot on its next possession and had to foul three times in order to send UW-Oshkosh to the free-throw line. The Yellowjackets' third foul sent Marsh to the free-throw stripe with 10.9 seconds left. Marsh missed the free throw, but UW-Oshkosh was awarded the basketball after it went out bounds off a UW-Superior player.

UW-Oshkosh's Matt Miller (Sr. • Hudson) was then fouled and he drained two free throws with 6.5 seconds left to give the Titans a 76-72 lead. UW-Oshkosh got the basketball back following a UW-Superior turnover and Marsh capped the Titans' victory on a dunk with 2.6 seconds to go.

The first half saw a tight battle, with Dane Seckar-Anderson (Sr. • Oshkosh) recording three baskets as UW-Oshkosh went up 13-12. The Yellowjackets took a 16-13 lead on Jason Proue’s lay-up, but that would be their largest advantage of the half.

The Titans took control behind Marsh as they amassed the next 14 points. Marsh drained a lay-up, jump shot and three-pointer in going ahead, 22-16. Cory Wittwer (So. • Fall Creek) then knocked down a long-distance field goal before Seckar-Anderson dropped in a lay-up for a 27-16 advantage with 7:57 to go in the period.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Jake Smith and Manor put the Yellowjackets on top (51-49), but Wittwer buried a long-range jumper to tie the contest at 54. Manor continued the exchange of leads with a jumper and eventually gave UW-Superior a 63-59 margin with 8:23 remaining. The Yellowjackets maintained that slim advantage until Marsh registered four straight points.

Luke Miller’s (Jr. • Elk Grove Village, Ill.) lay-up equaled the score at 68 with 4:21 to play before a Dwight Hill basket gave UW-Superior the lead. Marsh then tied the game at 70 with a lay-up. Following two free throws by Seckar-Anderson, Hill knotted the score at 72 with a pair of free throws at the 1:09 mark.

Titans' 2008-09 Season Preview

After winning 17 or more games for the 11th time in 13 seasons last year, the UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team looks to continue that success as it brings back its top three scorers in 2008-09. The Titans’ squad will feature six of last season’s lettermen, including All-WIAC first team selection D.J. Marsh (Jr. • Bayside).

UW-Oshkosh finished fourth in the conference last year with an 11-5 record. The Titans finished 17-9 overall after bolting out to their first 7-0 start since the 1996-97 campaign. UW-Oshkosh stepped its game up against quality competition, defeating four nationally ranked NCAA Division III opponents. In the fourth game of the year, Marsh hit a buzzer-beating jump shot to defeat 13th-ranked Elmhurst College (Ill.), 88-86. Matt Miller (Sr. • Hudson) then connected on 5-of-6 three-point shots one week later as UW-Oshkosh topped sixth-ranked UW-Whitewater, 80-74, in Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans’ first defeat of 2007-08 came against ninth-ranked Augustana College (Ill.). A furious second-half scoring run of 16-2 made it an exciting contest before UW-Oshkosh fell, 59-54. In a tough road test at third-ranked UW-Stevens Point, the Titans’ defense rose to the occasion and held the Pointers to just 18 percent shooting on three-pointers as they won the battle, 73-62. UW-Oshkosh also prevailed over the seventh-ranked Pointers in the late-season rematch, 73-61, thanks to a rebounding margin of plus-15.

Ted Van Dellen reached the 300-victory milestone last season as he improved his career head coaching record to 316-165. Entering his 19th year with the Titans, he ranks sixth in WIAC history with his career victory count. His UW-Oshkosh squads have posted a single-digit loss total in 11 of the last 13 campaigns and have won 251 games over the past 13 years, the second-highest total in the WIAC. The former UW-Oshkosh forward has also guided the team to five NCAA Division III Tournament appearances and a WIAC championship in 2001-02.

The only player not back from last year’s starting five is forward Jordan Johnson. Johnson capped his Titans career by leading UW-Oshkosh in rebounds, assists and steals last season. He also topped the WIAC in minutes played while coming up one rebound shy of the conference crown. Johnson started all 26 games and finished the year averaging 10 points and eight rebounds to go along with his totals of 67 assists and 41 steals.

UW-Oshkosh brings back 79 percent of its points and 88 percent of its three-point baskets from a team that had the same starting lineup for every contest last season. Marsh ranked fifth in the conference with 17 points per game last year while pulling in seven rebounds per contest. Two seasons ago, Marsh averaged 10 points and three rebounds as he became just the second freshman in 17 years to start all of UW-Oshkosh’s games.

The team’s lone three-time letterman, Matt Miller, connected on 90 three-point tries last season to rank sixth in WIAC history. He averaged 16 points while also leading the league with a 90 percent free throw rate.

Dane Seckar-Anderson (Sr. • Oshkosh) averaged 15 points and six rebounds in 2007-08. He made 55 percent of his attempts from the field and ranked second in the WIAC with 35 blocked shots.

The final returning starter is Greg Schrimpf (So. • Manitowoc), who made 46 percent of his long-range attempts in averaging eight points per game last year. Schrimpf may miss the 2008-09 season due to an injury.

Other lettermen back are Andy Kretsch (So. • Manitowoc) and Luke Miller (Jr. • Elk Grove Village, Ill.). Luke Miller played in all 26 games last year, while Kretsch played in nine.

Also returning to the squad are Derek Khan (Sr. • Greenfield), John Polkowski (Jr. • Goodman) and Cory Wittwer (So. • Fall Creek).

Three players join the Titans this season, including a pair of transfers in John Henney (So. • Burlington) from UW-Platteville and Steven Waudby (Jr. • Marquette, Mich.) from Michigan Tech University. The only freshmen on the team are John Flanigan (Oshkosh) and Jeff Kahn (Greenfield).

The Titans’ schedule begins with a home contest against St. Norbert College on Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. UW-Oshkosh looks to continue its early season success, as it has won 22 of its last 24 season openers. The scheduled slate also features eight contests with nationally-ranked NCAA Division III teams in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, including a battle at second-ranked Augustana College on Nov. 25. UW-Oshkosh opens WIAC play with consecutive road games at UW-River Falls on Dec. 6, UW-Stout on Dec. 13 and UW-Whitewater on Dec. 17.
