Titans' 2007-08 Preview

With an average of nearly 20 victories (19.5) over the past 12 years, the UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball program looks to continue its winning tradition with an unfamiliar youth movement after losing five of last year’s 11 lettermen.

UW-Oshkosh is led by head coach Ted Van Dellen, who enters his 18th season at the school with a career coaching record of 299-156. Van Dellen, the longest-tenured coach in the WIAC, has guided the Titans to single digit losses in 10 of the past 12 seasons. His 299 career coaching victories rank sixth in WIAC history.

UW-Oshkosh is coming off a very successful 2006-07 campaign in which it posted a 21-6 overall record and finished second in the WIAC with a 12-4 mark. It was the Titans’ third 20-win season in the past six years, including a WIAC championship campaign in 2002.

The Titans’ success will be determined by how well the young players learn the system and how quickly the returning veterans move into leadership roles. Three 100-game starters and two 1,000-point scorers moved on in the past year and those three starting positions will be filled by players who look to continue UW-Oshkosh’s impressive run.

This year’s team will try to fill the void created by the graduation of an impressive trio. Jim Capelle, Chad Doedens and Kerry Gibson are all gone after starting a total of 311 games over the past four seasons. In all, the Titans lose 56 percent of their points and 64 percent of their rebounds from a year ago.

Capelle leaves UW-Oshkosh as the seventh-leading scorer in UW-Oshkosh history with 1,559 points. He also ranks fifth in career three-point field goals with 186. The three-time All-WIAC first team selection also pulled down 613 rebounds while starting 107 games for the Titans.

Taking 272 assists with him, Chad Doedens closed his career with the eighth-highest assist total in UW-Oshkosh history. Doedens started 104 games and scored 585 points during his career.

There will be a very large hole to replace at the center position with the departure of Kerry Gibson. The 7-foot-1 center racked up 351 career blocked shots for the highest total in WIAC history and the 12th-highest mark in NCAA Division III annals. Gibson also reeled in 670 rebounds and scored 1,161 points during his 100 starting assignments as a Titan. Gibson received All-WIAC first team honors last season.

Five lettermen return from last year’s squad, including senior forward Jordan Johnson (Waupaca). Johnson started 18 games last year and averaged 8.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. The team captain will be counted on to cover the opponent’s top scoring threat as Johnson is UW-Oshkosh’s best defensive player.

Junior forward Dane Seckar-Anderson (Oshkosh) will take over as the man in the middle and has some very big shoes to fill after Gibson’s exit. He becomes a full-time starter after averaging 7.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game last season. Seckar-Anderson shot 55 percent from the floor and played in all 27 contests, starting four of them.

The Titans expect sophomore forward D.J. Marsh (Bayside) to be among the team’s leading scorers. Last year, Marsh started all 27 games and averaged 10.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest. He also made 42 percent of his three-point shots.

The point guard spot now belongs to junior Matt Miller (Hudson), who entered every game last season coming off of the bench. Miller averaged 4.8 points per game last year and 4.9 points per game the previous season. He connected on 45.7 percent of his three-point shots during the 2006-07 season.

Returning seniors Ryan Johnsen and Matt Dirkmann will battle for playing time at the shooting guard position. Johnsen played in 23 games last season and scored 52 points while shooting 43.8 percent behind the three-point line. Dirkmann scored one point in five games of action during the 2006-07 year.

Other Titans looking to make significant contributions this year are junior forward Scott Smith (Blanchardville), sophomore forward Luke Miller (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) and freshmen guards Brady Borgardt (Oshkosh), Andy Kretsch (Manitowoc) and Greg Shrimpf (Manitowoc).

Sophomore forward John Polkowski (Goodman), freshmen forwards Jeremiah Grothe (Hancock) and Cory Wittwer (Fall Creek) and junior guard Derek Khan (Greenfield) also look to compete for playing time.
