Knights Stun Titans With Last-Second Touchdown

Marian University (Ind.) scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass with one second remaining and defeated the 25th-ranked UW-Oshkosh football team, 24-20, Saturday (Sept. 13) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. It was the Titans' second loss to a scholarship-granting NAIA program in as many weeks.

Trailing 17-10 in the fourth quarter, UW-Oshkosh scored 10 points in just over two minutes to take a 20-17 lead with 3:22 remaining. A 27-yard Nate Ray field goal with 5:35 remaining was followed by a 4-yard touchdown run by Dylan Hecker at the 3:22 mark that provided the advantage.

Kevin MacCudden intercepted a Marian University pass on the ensuing possession, but UW-Oshkosh was forced to punt the ball back to the Knights with 44 seconds left.

Starting at their own 25-yard line, the Knights picked up 50 yards on three straight completions, setting up Brandon Beitzel's game-winning touchdown pass to Krishawn Hogan.

Two celebration penalties forced Marian University to kick off from its own 10-yard line, but the Knights recovered an on-side kick to end the game.

Marian University, the 2012 NAIA champion, held advantages in total offense (398-234), passing yards (280-160), third-down conversions (10-of-20 to 3-of-15) and time of possession (36:06 to 23:54).

UW-Oshkosh created three turnovers but didn't convert any of them into points.

Dylann Rauch completed 11-of-26 passes for 160 yards and one touchdown for the Titans. While sharing time at quarterback with Rauch, Dylan Hecker led UW-Oshkosh with 32 yards rushing on seven attempts. CJ Blackburn had a team-high four catches for 26 yards, while Joe Sommers caught three passes for a team-best 59 yards.

Beitzel completed 22-of-36 passes for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Knights. Marian University All-America running back Tevin Lake recorded his 23rd career 100-yard game, but was held to 102 yards rushing and 3.3 yards per carry. Hogan finished with seven catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns.

Marian University (1-1) led 10-0 after the first quarter on a 24-yard field goal and a 1-yard touchdown run by Lake.

A 37-yard field goal by Ray and a 14-yard pass from Rauch to Kyle Newhouse tied the score at 10-10 going to intermission.

Beitzel connected with Hogan on a 5-yard touchdown pass to give Marian University a 17-10 lead with 9:01 remaining in the third quarter.

Branden Lloyd led UW-Oshkosh with 12 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss. Cameron Brown recorded six tackles and one sack, while Cody Huemmer had six tackles, including 3.5 for a loss, and one forced fumble. John Eagan had one interception, and Corey Sigler had one fumble recovery.

Ryan Hartnett led Marian University with 12 tackles, including the Knights' only sack.

UW-Oshkosh will play its third consecutive scholarship-granting opponent when it travels to NCAA Division I (FCS) South Dakota State University next Saturday (Sept. 20).
