Lynx Defeat Titans To Win Three-Game Series

Rhodes College (Tenn.) took the lead for good with four unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning and pulled away for an 8-3 win over the UW-Oshkosh baseball team Monday (March 11) in Memphis, Tenn.

UW-Oshkosh (1-5) opened the scoring with a single from Hunter Staniske that plated Eric Modaff in the top of the third inning before the Lynx took advantage of an infield error by the Titans during the home half of the inning and led the rest of the way.

UW-Oshkosh starting pitcher Chris Atwood recorded a strikeout to begin the fateful bottom of the third inning, but six of the next seven Rhodes College batters reached base via an infield error, followed by a hit-by-pitch, a run-scoring single, a walk and back-to-back two-out RBI infield singles from Jake Stacy and Zach Liebenson.

UW-Oshkosh cut its deficits to 4-2 in the sixth inning and 5-3 during the eighth on run-scoring ground outs off the bat of Jensen Hinton. Rhodes College then put the game out of reach with a three-run eighth inning that included a two-run home run by Will Heurtin.

The Titans had the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs in the eighth inning, but Lynx relief pitcher Carter King thwarted the threat by inducing a popup.

Rhodes College outhit the Titans, 9-7, and drew eight walks.

Heurtin went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs for Rhodes College.

Staniske and Alex Koch had two hits apiece for the Titans. Koch and Jonathan Selchow collected doubles to account for UW-Oshkosh's extra-base hits.

Rhodes College starting pitcher C.J. Carron picked up the win, holding the Titans to one run on three hits through five innings. He walked three and struck out four.

Atwood (0-2) was charged with the loss for the Titans after surrendering five runs (one earned) on six hits and six walks with four strikeouts across six innings pitched.

Rhodes College and UW-Oshkosh began their three-game series by splitting a doubleheader Sunday in Memphis.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Lexington, Ky., for three games this weekend. The Titans open the trip with single contests Saturday (March 16) against Ohio Athletic Conference members Otterbein and John Carroll universities.
