Seven-Run Inning Leads Titans To Win Over Eagles

The UW-Oshkosh baseball team used a seven-run third inning to pull away and defeat Benedictine University (Ill.), 13-3, in eight innings on Thursday (March 22) in Auburndale, Fla.

Following a scoreless first inning, Benedictine University (6-3) took a 1-0 lead on Brenden Norberg's two-out single in the top half of the second frame.

The Titans answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the second inning as Jensen Hinton drove in one score with a single and Jonathan Selchow two with a two-out home run. The home run was Selchow's first of the season.

UW-Oshkosh (9-2), which has won its last eight games, pulled in front by nine runs after scoring seven times on seven hits and one Benedictine University error in the third inning. The Titans opened the frame with five straight hits and produced multiple scores on a two-run single by Hinton and a two-run double by Schwenn. UW-Oshkosh also received a run-scoring double by Dylan Ott and run-scoring singles from both Taylor Grimm and Jack Paulson.

Benedictine University go two runs back in the sixth inning to cut its deficit to 10-3. The Eagles scored both runs on a two-out double by Sam Kerr.

The Titans increased their advantage to 11-3 on Noah Polcyn's two-out single in the seventh inning.

UW-Oshkosh then ended the game with two one-out runs in the eighth inning. The Titans scored on a Grimm double and a passed ball that advanced Sean Cummins to home plate.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 14 hits and Benedictine University nine. Both teams left five runners on base.

UW-Oshkosh's hit count included three from Schwenn and two apiece from Grimm, Hinton and Alex Koch. Hinton drove in three runs while Koch, Otto and Schwenn all scored twice.

Benedictine University compiled nine hits, with three belonging to Jimmy McLaughlin and two to Kerr.

UW-Oshkosh pitcher Colan Treml (4-0) earned the victory after a complete-game effort. He scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs with four strikeouts. Treml faced 32 batters, eight over the minimum.

Four Benedictine University pitchers saw action, including starter James Wright (2-1) who took the loss after hurling two innings. Wright allowed five hits and five runs, all earned.

Drake Berman followed Wright, but didn't get an out as he allowed three hits and three runs (two earned) to the four batters he faced. Justin Sosa replaced Berman and yielded six hits and five runs (two earned) over the next five innings. Joshua Silverman struck out one batter in the eighth inning before the game ended.
