Titans Score Often During Win over Vikings

Jack Paulson went 4-for-4 at the plate and tied a WIAC record with five stolen bases as the UW-Oshkosh baseball team registered a seven-inning 15-1 victory over Lawrence University on Sunday (March 18) in Auburndale, Fla.

Paulson scored all four times he reached base following singles in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. He drove in one run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth while stealing two bases in the first and fourth frames and one in the third. Paulson's five stolen bases tied WIAC and UW-Oshkosh records that were set by Gary Varsho against UW-Whitewater in 1982.

UW-Oshkosh's Taylor Grimm also had a big game, going 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and five runs batted in. Grimm hit a two-run home run in the first inning, reached on an infield single in the third, drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and belted a two-run double in the fifth.

The Titans (6-2) had two other players with multiple hits – Alex Koch and Dylan Ott.

Koch went 2-for-4 at the plate while scoring twice and driving in two runs with a fifth-inning home run and another with a third-inning bunt single.

Ott hit safely during both of his two at-bats and scored twice. Ott produced his lone RBI with a third-inning double.

In all, UW-Oshkosh tallied 13 hits. The count featured four extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs.

Lawrence University (3-8) was held to six hits and went scoreless after counting its lone run on a first-inning triple by Matthew Holliday. Holliday also singled in the sixth inning to become the only Viking with multiple hits.

UW-Oshkosh scored all of its runs in the first five innings, including seven on four hits and one Lawrence University error in the fifth frame. The Titans also scored three runs in the third inning, two in both the first and fourth innings and one in the second.

UW-Oshkosh pitcher Jesse Sustachek (1-0) earned the win after working six innings. He allowed just five hits and one earned run while totaling four strikeouts. Sustachek faced 22 batters, four over the minimum, and retired the Vikings in order during the second and fifth innings.

Jon Maday pitched the seventh inning for UW-Oshkosh and struck out two of the four batters he faced. Maday allowed one hit during his scoreless performance.

Lawrence University sent four players to the pitching mound, including starter Nick Guzzo who took the loss after tossing four innings. Guzzo gave up nine hits and eight runs, six of which were earned.

Cullen Ellis gave up four hits, three walks and seven runs to UW-Oshkosh in the fifth inning before Mike Brady struck out all three Titans he faced in the sixth.

UW-Oshkosh takes on third-ranked Washington & Jefferson College (Pa.) on Monday (March 19) in Auburndale. The Presidents finished second at last year's NCAA Division III World Series in Appleton.
