Titans Use Strong Pitching To Conquer Presidents

Jacob Pohlman and Scott Gorsuch combined to pitch nine innings with just three hits allowed while Andy Brahier drove in one of his two runs with a homer as the UW-Oshkosh baseball team defeated Washington & Jefferson College (Pa.), 4-1, on Monday (March 20) in Auburndale, Fla.

Pohlman (1-0) pitched one out into the seventh inning and earned the win after yielding only one run and two hits with seven strikeouts. He faced just 16 batters through five innings, with the only base runner reaching on a single in the second inning.

Pohlman left the two batters he walked and the one he hit on base in the sixth inning before being replaced by Gorsuch after a one-out, run-scoring triple by Ryan Sciullo in the seventh. Gorsuch ended the Presidents' threat by striking out James Artale and Luke Zahren in succession.

Washington & Jefferson College (5-2) loaded the bases with a single and two walks in the eighth inning before Gorsuch stopped the threat by striking out Mark Merlino and retiring Sciullo on a groundout.

Gorsuch then struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning to earn his first career save. Gorsuch hurled the final 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit with five strikeouts.

Brahier went 2-for-4 in the contest and gave UW-Oshkosh a 3-0 lead with his sixth-inning single and a 4-1 advantage with a solo home run in the eighth. The homer was Brahier's second of the season.

The Titans scored a pair of two-out runs in the second inning as Nate Given and Jack Paulson hit run-producing singles in consecutive at-bats.

UW-Oshkosh (3-4) totaled 11 hits, including two each from Paulson, Johnny Eagan and Dylan Ott

Washington & Jefferson College's three hits were by Merlino, Sciullo and Adam LaRue.

Trevor Kerr started on the mound for the Presidents and pitched 5.1 innings before being replaced for the duration of the contest by Matt Heslin. Kerr (0-1) took the loss after yielding eight hits and three runs, while Heslin allowed three hits and one run. Kerr struck out eight batters and Heslin three.

UW-Oshkosh follows an off day on Tuesday (March 20) with a doubleheader against Bowdoin College (Maine) on Wednesday (March 21) in Auburndale.
