Beacons' Walkoff Hit Defeats Titans

Dave Murphy's one-out, pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave University of Massachusetts Boston a 4-3 victory over the UW-Oshkosh baseball team on Friday (March 17) in Auburndale, Fla.

UW-Oshkosh, playing the first of its eight games in the Sunshine State, fell behind 3-0 before rallying to tie the score at 3 on Tyler Kozlowski's two-out, solo home run in the top of the eighth inning.

After retiring the UW-Oshkosh batters in order in the top of the ninth inning, University of Massachusetts Boston (5-4) created its game-winning score with the help of one walk and two hits in the bottom half of the frame.

Chris Fowler walked to lead off the ninth inning for the Beacons and was replaced by Danny Brown as a baserunner. Following an infield popout, Eddie Riley singled to shortstop to put runners on first and second bases. Murphy was then called upon to bat for Charlie Huegi, and the result was a walkoff hit to left field that scored Brown.

University of Massachusetts Boston, a first-time opponent of UW-Oshkosh, took a 1-0 lead on Dan Mantoni's infield single.

The Beacons then extended their lead to 3-0 on a triple to right field by Joey Rogers and a sacrifice fly by Nick Herzog in the fifth inning.

UW-Oshkosh (2-2) pulled within 3-2 of the Beacons by scoring twice in the sixth inning. Following a pair of strikeouts to open the frame, Jack Paulson singled to left field and scored on a double down the left field line by Kozlowski. Johnny Eagan then recorded an infield single and advanced to second base on a throwing error that also allowed Kozlowski to score.

Kozlowski finished the game with three of UW-Oshkosh's six hits. University of Massachusetts Boston counted seven hits as seven different players tallied one hit each.

JT Morin (1-0) pitched the final two innings to earn the win for the Beacons. He allowed just one hit and one run while striking four. Mantoni started on the mound for University of Massachusetts Boston, yielding five hits and two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts in seven innings of work.

UW-Oshkosh's Colan Treml pitched eight strong innings and allowed three runs on five hits with a career-best nine strikeouts.

The Titans' Lucas Gregory (0-1) walked the leadoff batter of the ninth inning and took the pitching loss as the free pass he issued to the only person he faced came around to score. Jacob Pohlman pitched to the game's final three batters, retiring one on a popout before allowing successive hits to Riley and Murphy.

UW-Oshkosh returns to action against Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday (March 18) in Winter Haven, Fla.
