Pointers Prevail Over Titans

The UW-Oshkosh baseball team outhit UW-Stevens Point in both ends of the doubleheader, but the Pointers prevailed in both games on Saturday (April 11) in Stevens Point.

UW-Steven Point (15-4, 6-1 WIAC), ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III by D3baseball.com, won by scores of 8-5 in the opener and 11-6 in the second contest despite being outhit, 14-10, in the first game and 11-6 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Bobby Gregorich hit a grand slam with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift UW-Stevens Point to victory.

Gregorich ended the contest 3-for-4 with one triple, one home run, two runs and five runs batted in.

Jimmy Coady and Ray Greco added two of the Pointers' 10 hits.

The Pointers received run-scoring triples from Gregorich and Greco in jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

The Titans answered with four runs on four hits after two were out in the second frame. Tyler Kozlowski drove in a run with a single and Robbie Kleman followed with a two-run single for a 4-3 advantage.

UW-Oshkosh starting pitcher Matt Sabel limited UW-Stevens Point to four hits from the second through sixth frames, and the Titans increased their lead to 5-3 on an RBI-double by Jack Paulson in the seventh.

Sabel allowed the first two Pointers to reach in the seventh inning before exiting with the tying runs on base. UW-Stevens Point loaded the bases with no outs against Titan reliever Jesse Sustacheck, and the Pointers cut their deficit to 5-4 on a two-out, bases-loaded walk. But Jacob Pohlman, UW-Oshkosh's third pitcher of the inning, stranded the bases loaded by striking out the first batter he faced.

The Pointers loaded the bases again with no outs in the eighth inning off on two walks and an error by Pohlman before Gregorich greeted new Titan reliever Lucas Gregory with a grand slam to right field.

Ben Miller (4-0) earned the win for UW-Stevens Point by allowing one run on six hits in four innings of relief. Miller entered in the fifth inning for Pointer starting pitcher Mark Kowalke, who yielded four runs on eight hits and five walks in four innings.

UW-Stevens Point's Heinrich Walder earned his fourth save of the season after entering in the ninth inning with two on and no outs and induced a double play and a groundout to end the game.

UW-Oshkosh's Jacob Pohlman (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in one-third of an inning. Sabel gave up four runs and struck out six batters in six innings pitched.

Kozlowski went 3-for-4 to lead the Titans' 14-hit attack. Andy Brahier, John Eagan, Kleman and Logan Reckert each added two hits for UW-Oshkosh.

In the second game, Kozlowski hit a two-run home run in the first inning, but UW-Stevens Point took a 4-3 lead on a three-run homer by Cody Hanke in the third frame.

UW-Oshkosh reclaimed a 5-4 advantage in the top of the fourth inning on Kozlowski's two-out, two-run single, but the Pointers went ahead for good with four runs on just one hit in their half of the fourth inning.

Following an infield error to begin the home half of the fourth inning, UW-Oshkosh starting pitcher Adam Rude hit two batters, Titan reliever Ryan Chancellor plunked the first batter he faced, and Coady knocked in two with a double.

UW-Stevens Point added single runs in both the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Kyle McHugh's second home run of the season made the score 10-5 in the sixth frame.

The Titans plated a run in the eighth inning on double-play groundout.

Hanke had four runs batted in for the Pointers, who also received two hits and two RBIs from Coady and Riley Spetz.

Ryan Williams (1-0) earned his first collegiate win after pitching three innings of scoreless relief. Williams relieved McHugh, the Pointer starting pitcher, with two outs in the fourth inning. Williams ceded two hit and three walks while striking out three.

Eagan and Kozlowski combined to go 5-for-7 atop the UW-Oshkosh batting order. Eagan doubled, scored three runs and stole his team-leading 17th base of the season. Kozlowski connected on his second home run of the year among his three hits and drove in four.

Luke Gajewski and Pohlman added two hits apiece for the Titans.

Rude (1-2) suffered the loss for the Titans after surrendering seven runs (six earned) in 3.1 innings pitched.
