Titans Hold Off Late Pioneer Threats

UW-Oshkosh won its third straight baseball game as a trio of relief pitchers came on to preserve the Titans' 5-3 victory over Grinnell College (Iowa) on Sunday (March 22) in Auburndale, Fla.

Matt Sabel started on the mound for UW-Oshkosh (3-4) and pitched into the seventh inning before being replaced by Jesse Sustachek with two outs in the frame. Sabel (1-0) eventually earned the win after allowing two runs and five hits with four strikeouts.

UW-Oshkosh held a 4-2 lead when Sustachek entered with Grinnell College runners on first and third bases. Following Niko Takayesu's steal of second base, Sustachek got the Pioneers' Ryan Penaflor to pop out to end the inning.

Sustachek then pitched two outs into the eighth inning before exiting with a Pioneer on every base. Lucas Gregory replaced Sustachek and yielded a run-scoring single to pinch-hitter Sam Galanek that sliced the Titans' deficit to 4-3. Galanek's hit ended the inning as the Pioneers' Walker Bell was thrown out at home plate trying to score.

UW-Oshkosh added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Gregory remained on the mound for the Titans and pitched two outs into the ninth inning before being replaced by Ryan Chancellor with Pioneers on first and second bases. It took just two pitches for Chancellor to earn his first collegiate save as he got Graham Fisher to ground out.

Grinnell College (2-8) took a 1-0 lead on Matt Godinsky's home run in the third inning and went scoreless until Takayesu singled in the seventh.

Courtesy of two Grinnell College errors, UW-Oshkosh scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Titans then doubled their advantage on Tyler Kozlowski's two-run single in the sixth. UW-Oshkosh made the score 5-2 on Jack Paulson's single off the third baseman.

UW-Oshkosh totaled eight hits, including a double and triple by Robbie Kleman. The Titans also received two hits from Paulson.

Grinnell College compiled 10 hits, including Godinsky's home run and two hits apiece from Matt Hammond and Anthony Mack.

Andrew Mack pitched all eight innings for the Pioneers and allowed three earned runs with five strikeouts.

UW-Oshkosh takes to the field against Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) and Keuka College (N.Y.) on Tuesday (March 24) in Winter Haven.
