Oshkosh, Winneconne Welcome Top Runners For National Championships

UW-Oshkosh and the Oshkosh and Winneconne communities are preparing to welcome the top runners from around the nation as hosts of the 2018 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.

The championships are set for Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne. A total of 64 men’s and women’s cross country teams will partake in the championships. Along with the 32 seven-person rosters for each gender, 56 individual qualifiers for both will also participate in the final Division III cross country meet of the year.

That means a big influx of visitors will be descending on Oshkosh as early as Wednesday (Nov. 13), and Amy Albright, executive director of the Oshkosh Convention and Visitors Bureau, can’t wait.

“Oshkosh is thrilled to be hosting the NCAA Cross Country Championships,” Albright said. “Bringing in nearly 600 athletes from all over the country is not only exciting, but also it is big business. This event will have a positive economic impact on our entire community. Hotels, restaurants, local attractions and retail outlets will benefit from these athletes and their families enjoying our great city. We are so proud of Oshkosh and love showing it off to our visitors.”

The event will bring student-athletes and fans from California, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, New York and Vermont, to name a few.

The Titans are hosting the prestigious event for the third time in the past eight years and fourth overall. UW-Oshkosh previously hosted the championships in 1999, 2011 and 2015.

UW-Oshkosh itself has three student-athletes who will run for a national championship Saturday. Evlyn Noone placed eighth at last Saturday’s (Nov. 10) Midwest Regional to secure a spot in the women’s national championship, while Lucas Weber and Cody Chadwick finished 21st and 26th, respectively, to claim a spot in the men’s national meet.

“Both of our teams are very young, so it is very special to have student-athletes of both genders representing us as we host the national championships,” said UW-Oshkosh head cross country coach Eamon McKenna. “Evlyn and Lucas are both graduates from Oshkosh Lourdes Academy, so it is particularly awesome for them to be able to continue their career as student-athletes in their hometown and to have the opportunity to compete at a national championship that we host. Cody, our other qualifier, was coached by a UW-Oshkosh alum while in high school, as were Evlyn and Lucas, so that is yet another cool connection about the power of our Titan family. It will be a fun experience for all three to compete in front of the home crowd.”

While Oshkosh is hosting the Division III Championship, the University of Wisconsin will be hosting the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships concurrently in Verona.

With these two high-profile cross country events, along with the Foot Locker Cross Country Midwest Regional Championships taking place in Somers, Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed the week of Nov. 17-24, 2018, as Cross Country Week.

The Division III Championships begins with the women’s 6,000-meter race at 11:15 a.m. The men’s 8,000-meter race follows at 12:15 p.m. Spectators looking to attend the event can park at Winneconne High School (100 Wolf Run, Winneconne, Wis., 54986) and use the shuttle service for a $5 round-trip fee.
