Sims To Be Featured In WIAC Panel Discussion

Wisconsin as a state punches above its weight class in college sports, and a major reason for this is the athletic directors from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

The conference, which owns 115 NCAA Division III team championships, will be the subject of an upcoming panel discussion for the “The Culture of Sports”, a program that focuses on its business, community, economic, educational, philosophical, political, and spiritual features.

The WIAC will be represented in the discussion by Athletic Directors Darryl Sims from UW-Oshkosh, Shannon Early from UW-Platteville and Todd Garzarelli from UW-Whitewater. Sims is in his 10th year as UW-Oshkosh's Director of Athletics.

"We are very pleased to have the opportunity to be featured on an upcoming segment of 'The Culture of Sports' show and are looking forward to future segments that will feature discussions with additional WIAC athletic directors on a variety of topics," said WIAC Commissioner Gary Karner.

Jonathan Yates, the creator of the show, will moderate the discussion from the WIAC Office in Madison on Sept. 26. The exact date for the show to go public has yet to be announced.

Yates is a weekly contributor for College AD and the Contributing Sports Columnist for WhatsUp Magazine.

Yates also teaches a course, “The Politics of Sports”. He has degrees from Harvard University, The Johns Hopkins University, and Georgetown University Law Center; and has also matriculated at the U.S. Naval War College and The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Yates has spent the majority of his career working for Members of Congress and state Legislators in Positions such as Chief of Staff, General Counsel, Legislative Director, Press Secretary, and Legislative Assistant. Twice he was granted Top Secret Clearance in accordance with his duties on Capitol Hill. In the private sector, he was General Counsel for a publicly traded company and Assistant Washington Counsel for a major trade association. Yates has taught courses on government, business law, business-government relations, and national security policy.

Thousands of Yates' articles and interviews on sports, business, politics, and other topics have appeared in media outlets such as CNBC, NPR, American Politics, Atlantic Community Quarterly, Baltimore Sun, Boston Herald, Buffalo News, Charlotte Observer, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Christian Science Monitor, Des Moines Register, Detroit News, Foreign Policy, Hartford Courant, Houston Chronicle, Investor’s Business Daily, Legal Times, Michigan Law Weekly, New York Times, News American, Philadelphia Inquirer, Toronto Daily Mail, and The Washington Post, among others.
