Points for the awards are given according to the final conference standings in each sport on a 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, or 8-7-6, etc., depending on how many schools compete in each sport. Either (but not both) indoor or outdoor track & field are included in the calculations, and the awards are determined on the basis of the lowest number of sports offered by any WIAC institution in each category (men - 5, women - 7, combined - 13).

The WIAC recognized its first Men’s All-Sports Award champion during the 1966-67 academic year. The first Women’s All-Sports Award champion was crowned during the 1987-88 academic year and the first Combined All-Sports Award champion in 1997-98.
